Sand Bypassing Works - November 2009
Northern Beaches Stabilisation Programme (NBSP)
The GPA is monitoring shoreline movement of the beaches between the Batavia Coast Marina and the Chapman River through the Northern Beaches Stabilisation Programme (NBSP). Through the programme the GPA provides beach sand nourishment to help maintain long-term shoreline stability.
The Port has a commitment to move approximately 12,500 cubic metres of sand each year, subject to seasonal influences. The most sand that can sensibly be moved on any given day is 2000 to 3000 cubic metres. This limitation is to provide the opportunity for the sand to naturally rebuild at the source location.
The sand is bypassed the Port using trucks and transported to north of the Batavia Coast Marina, following what would be the natural flow of the sand if, as it is argued, it were not for the Port and other infrastructure.
This project will be reviewed in 2009, to assess whether the volume of sand being transported should increase or decrease.
The NBSP has come about as a result of the City of Geraldton’s concerns of the beaches being subject to erosion over some years.
The City also wanted to create an artificial beach at the northern side of the Batavia Coast Marina and the sand-bypassing can also help to create and maintain this over time.
This project is undertaken in conjunction with the City of Geraldton, Department of Environment and the Department of Transport.
The NBSP document and map are available here to be down loaded.
